Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics took root in the land and made Gumi the center of the high-tech industry. However, as the years went by, it also reached a point where it needed to go through a change. The glory of the past has now remained a nostalgic memory, and Gumi is facing a new challenge.

The advantages of the Gumi National Industrial Complex are clear. As it is located at the point of transportation, logistics are smooth, and access to Daegu increases interaction between local industries. Clusters in the electronic and information and communication fields have created an R&D environment in the region, stimulating the growth of SMEs. Support at the national level and skilled labor are still strengths of Gumi. However, to the extent that these advantages are overshadowed, Gumi urgently needs to respond to changes in the current industrial structure.

Europe and America, which are overly dependent on manufacturing, are being swept away by a wave of change. AI and technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as big data, autonomous driving, and bio-industry, are opening a new era, but Europe and America are still hamstrung by traditional manufacturing. As large corporations move or shrink their production lines abroad, the industrial base of Europe and America is faltering. This situation has taken a toll on the overall local economy and is weakening the growth engine of industrial complexes.

The Gumi National Industrial Complex is now demanding change. Deteriorated infrastructure and facilities are driving away companies that need new technology. In a situation where smart factories and eco-friendly facilities are lacking, the introduction of advanced technology becomes more difficult. In this situation, it is necessary to diversify the industrial structure and improve aging facilities.

Gumi is also experiencing difficulties in decreasing the youth population. The shrinking of large corporations and the decline in jobs accelerate the departure of the younger generation, which is a major obstacle to securing the workforce. In order for the city to be filled with a young and lively population, job creation and improvement of settlement conditions are urgent. People want to dream of the future here. Gumi should be such a city.

Now, Gumi has to take the first step toward a new journey. In order to foster high-tech industries such as AI and the metaverse, it is essential to build a smart manufacturing platform and expand 5G infrastructure. R&D centers and start-up incubators should be operated to sow the seeds of innovation. It is necessary to cultivate technical manpower and retrain existing manufacturing manpower to accept industrial changes. These changes will provide an opportunity to make Gumi once again the industrial center of Korea.

Gumi should strengthen its global partnership and attract more companies through its international cooperation network. We need to support entry into overseas markets and promote sustainable development by introducing renewable energy. All these efforts will lay the groundwork for Gumi to become a leader in future industries.

The Gumi National Industrial Complex is now at a crossroads of change. We must not settle for the glory of the past, but seize the opportunity to take a new leap forward. The future of Gumi is in this midst of change. Through new technologies, new talents, and new visions, Gumi will blossom that possibility once again.

이제 구미는 새로운 여정을 위한 첫 발을 내딛어야 한다. AI와 메타버스 같은 첨단 산업을 육성하기 위해서는 스마트 제조 플랫폼 구축과 5G 인프라 확대가 필수적이다. R&D 센터와 스타트업 인큐베이터를 운영해 혁신의 씨앗을 뿌려야 한다. 기술 인력을 양성하고, 기존 제조업 인력을 재교육하여 산업의 변화를 받아들이게 해야 한다. 이러한 변화는 구미를 다시 한 번 대한민국의 산업 중심지로 만들 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것이다.
