Henry Monroe Bruen, a missionary from the North Presbyterian Church of the United States, was literally a symbol of "dedication."

Born in the United States in 1874, he decided to pursue his career as a missionary after completing his studies at the prestigious Princeton University and Union Theological Seminary in the United States.

In 1899, his steps made their way to Daegu, Korea. There, he conducted missionary activities for over 40 years.

He came to Daegu and created a missionary branch with James Edward Adams, and was appointed as the second pastor in charge of Daegu First Church, leading the Christian missionary activities in Daegu.

After that, he pioneered the Daegu Namsan Church and continued to conduct tours and pioneer churches throughout Gyeongsangbuk-do. With his dedicated efforts, about 60 churches were established in Gyeongsangbuk-do under his leadership.

But his efforts went beyond just building a church. He built hospitals and chapels for leprosy patients and carried out relief projects.

This was an extension to a new realm in his path of love and service as a missionary.

His influence spread further through the many students he taught. Among them were many independence activists and pastors, including Lee Gap-sung, an independence activist during the March 1st Movement.

The story of Henry Monroe Bruen's missionary work was compiled and published by his second wife Clara Hedberg Bruen.

Through this, the precious records of his dedicated efforts and missionary activities are handed down to posterity.

Henry Monroe Bruen died in the United States in 1959, but his dedication and hard work remain a special mark in the Christian history of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province.

His story reminds us of the value of dedication, service, and love.

Henry Monroe Bruen remains with us as an eternal memory even on such a distant land.

미국 북장로회 출신의 선교사 헨리 먼로 브루엔은 이름 그대로 '헌신'의 상징이었다. 

1874년에 미국에서 태어난 그는 미국의 명문 프린스턴대학교와 유니언신학교에서 학업을 마치고, 선교사로서의 길을 걷기로 결심했다.

1899년, 그의 발걸음은 먼 곳 한국 대구로 향했다. 그곳에서 그는 40년 넘게 선교활동을 펼쳤다. 

대구로 와서 제임스 에드워드 애덤스와 함께 선교지부를 창설했고, 대구제일교회의 2대 담임 목사로 임명되어 대구의 기독교 선교 활동을 주도했다. 

이후에는 대구남산교회를 개척하고, 경상북도 전역에 걸쳐 순회 전도와 교회 개척을 이어나갔다. 그의 헌신적인 노력으로 경상북도에는 그의 지도 아래 약 60여 개의 교회가 설립되었다.

하지만 그의 노력은 단지 교회를 세우는 것에 그치지 않았다. 그는 한센병 환자들을 위한 병원과 예배당을 짓고, 구제 사업을 펼쳐 나갔다. 

이는 그가 선교사로서 사랑과 봉사의 길을 걷는 데 있어서 새로운 영역으로의 확장이었다.

그의 영향력은 그가 가르친 많은 학생들을 통해 더욱 확산되었다. 그들 중에는 3·1운동 시대의 독립운동가로 활동한 이갑성을 비롯하여 많은 독립운동가와 목사가 있었다.

헨리 먼로 브루엔의 선교 이야기는 그의 두 번째 부인 클라라 헤드버그 브루엔에 의해 정리되어 출간되었다. 

이를 통해 그의 헌신적인 노력과 선교활동의 소중한 기록은 후세에 전해지고 있다.

헨리 먼로 브루엔은 1959년에 미국에서 세상을 떠났지만, 그의 헌신과 노고는 대구와 경상북도의 기독교 역사에 특별한 흔적으로 남아있다. 

그의 이야기는 우리에게 헌신과 봉사, 사랑의 가치를 되새기게 한다. 

헨리 먼로 브루엔은 그토록 멀리 떠난 땅에서도 영원한 기억으로 우리 곁에 남아있다.
