신호균 금오공대 명예교수의 '컨설팅 이론과 실제'에 따르면 일반적인 컨설팅 개념은 특정분야에 대해 전매적인 지식이나 정보, 전문성 등을 바탕으로 의뢰인으로부터 대가를 받고 자문이나 조언을 제공하 는 서비스 활동’이라고 할 수 있다.

한편으로 ‘컨설팅’이라는 학문이 아직 명확하게 정립되지 못한 상황이므로 컨설팅의 정의 역시 다양한 관점에서 여러 학자 및 기관들에 의해서 다양하게 내려지고 있다고 한다.

유능한 컨설턴트로 성장하기 위해서는 분석력과 비즈니스 지식, 뛰어난 커뮤니케이션과 협상 능력, 창의성과 실행능력, 윤리적 프로페셔널리즘을 갖출 수 있도록 꾸준히 노력해야 한다.

무엇보다도 신뢰와 열정을 한 몸에 받을 수 있는 지덕체  함양에 게을리해서는 안된다.
