 17세기 스페인의 철학자 발타자르 그라시안이 쓴 '사람을 얻는 지혜'는 니체와 쇼펜하우어가 극찬한, 인간 본성과 관계에 대한 최고의 통찰로 알려져 있다.

특히 쇼펜하우어는 독일어로 직접 번역하기 위해 스페인어를 따로 배웠을 정도였다고 한다.

발타자르 그라시안은 책을 통해 쉽게 믿는 사람은 금방 수치를 당한다고 했고, 내용은 다음과 같다.

"쉽게 믿지도, 사랑하지도 말라. 쉽게 믿지 않음은 판단력이 성숙했다는 뜻이다.

거짓말이 너무 흔하므로 믿는 일 자체가 특별한 일이 되어야 한다. 쉽게 믿는 사람은 금방 수치를 당한다 그렇다고 다른 사람이 주는 신뢰를 공개적으로 의심해도 안 된다.

그런 무례함은 모욕으로 이어지고, 그들을 속이는 사람이나 다른 사람에게 속아 넘어간 사람으로 취급하는 것이기 때문이다.

하지만 그보다 안 좋은 이유가 있는데, 남을 믿지 않는다는 것은 거짓말쟁이임을 보여주는 징표라는 점이다. 그리고 그런 사람은 다른 사람을 믿지 않고, 다른 사람도 그를 믿지 않는다는 두 가지 결점을 드러낸다.

그러므로 말을 들었다면 판단을 유보하는 게 지혜로운 처사다. 어느 작가는 믿음에 대해 말하면서 "쉽게 사랑에 빠지는 것은 일종의 경솔함이다"라고 했다.

만일 거짓말을 한다면, 행동도 거짓이라는 뜻이다. 또한, 말보다는 행동으로 속이는 게 결과적으로는 훨씬 더 해롭다."
