Independence activist Hyangsan Lee Man-do heard the sad news that he had lost his national sovereignty to the Japanese in 1910, and the teacher resolutely resisted the Japanese colonial rule by fasting and died in 24 days.

He went on a hunger strike, saying he failed to protect his people, and eventually died holy.

Lee Man-do informed the intellectual's responsibilities by leaving the following words.

"When Sunbi is born into the world and the country is comfortable, return the favor, and when the country is in crisis, give your life."

Lee Man-do served as a righteous army commander in Yean when the Eulmi Incident occurred in 1895 and the order of the Danbong was issued, and in 1905, when the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905 was forcibly signed, he was an intellectual who filed an appeal criticizing the Eulsa Ohjeok.

Relatives, disciples, and writers came to Lee Man-do's hunger strike and earnestly dissuaded him, but the teacher did not budge.

Lee Man-do's self-immolation spread to the hunger strike of neighboring Confucian scholars and was recorded as a magnificent history of the country.

It created an opportunity for descendants such as sons, grandchildren, and daughters-in-law to carry out the independence movement.

The scholar's spirit of not being able to kneel down to Japanese imperialism and fasting martyrdom to fulfill loyalty and responsibility to the military king and the people are not feudal ideas, but are evaluated as the minimum moral virtues useful today.

독립운동가 향산 이만도 선생은 1910년 일제에게 국권을 빼앗겼다는 비보를 듣고, 선생은 단식으로 결연히 일제에 항거하다가 24일 만에 순국하였다.

민족을 지키지 못했다며 단식투쟁에 들어가 끝내 거룩하게 순국한 것이다.

이만도 선생은 다음과 같은 말을 남기며 지식인의 책무에 대해 알렸다.

“선비가 세상에 태어나서 나라가 편안할 때는 은혜에 보답하고, 나라가 위기에 처했을 때는 목숨을 바치라.”

이만도 선생은 1895년 을미사변이 일어나고 단발령이 내려지자 예안에서 의병장으로 활약하였으며, 을사늑약이 강제로 체결된 1905년에는 을사오적을 비판하는 상소를 올린 지식인이다.

이만도 선생의 단식투쟁에 친척과 제자와 문인들이 찾아와 간곡하게 만류했으나 선생은 뜻을 굽히지 않았다. 

이만도 선생의 자정순국은 이웃 유림의 단식투쟁으로 확산되어 장엄한 순국의 역사로 기록됐다.

아들과 손자와 며느리 등 후손까지 독립운동을 전개한 계기를 만들었다.

일제에 무릎을 꿇을 수 없다는 선비의 기개와 군왕과 민족에 대한 의리와 책임을 다하기 위한 단식순국은 봉건적 사상이 아니라 오늘날에도 유용한 최소한의 도덕적 덕목으로 평가된다.
