Except for the northwest of Hyeonggok-dong, Gumi-si, it is a basin topography surrounded by mountains, a mountainous area northeast of the Geumosan Mountain Range.

The beautiful Geumosan Mountain, which can be seen from Hyeonggok Jungang-ro, is reaching its peak in autumn.

Hyeonggok-dong has grown by functioning as a city behind the Gumi National Industrial Complex so that workers can lead comfortable lives.

At that time, the principle of creating a background city was to have a residential complex located in a place where workers could forget everything and live a comfortable residential life.

After being promoted to Gumi-si in 1978, Sinsi-dong was established, and in 1990, the name of the administrative dong was changed to Hyeonggok-dong.

In 1995, it was divided into Hyeonggok 1-dong and 2-dong and has reached the present day.

According to the Korean Geographical Names General's Office, the unique geographical name "Simusil" can be confirmed through the record that "Simusil" was incorporated into Gumi-myeon in 1914 by merging parts of Sanghyeong-dong, Hahyeong-dong, and Busan-dong."

In addition, you can know the names of villages such as Simusil (Hyeonggok 1-dong), Sachang (Hyeonggok 2-dong), Wit Village, and Singi-dong, which were distributed in this area in the past.

Currently, some residents recognize "Sachang" as a place name derived from a warehouse that used to store grains during the Silla Dynasty, as it was named because of the many trees of Simusil. It is said that the current dong was in Hagumi-myeon in the late Joseon Dynasty.

Hyeonggok-dong is a luxury city with Geumosan Mountain nearby and enjoys the benefits of nature that provides fresh clean air.

사진 설명: 형곡중앙로에서 바라다 보이는 금오산, 형곡동은 황금봉과 효자봉 등의 산으로 둘러싸여 산림복지를 실현할 수 있는 최적의 지형을 갖고 있다.

구미시 형곡동의 북서쪽을 제외한 모든 지역이 금오산 지맥 북동쪽 산록인 산지로 둘러싸여 있는 분지 지형이다.

형곡중앙로에서 바라다 보이는 수려한 금오산은 가을을 맞이해 그 자태가 절정에 이르고 있다.

형곡동은 구미국가공단 근로자들이 안락한 삶을 영위할 수 있도록 배후도시로서의 기능을 해오며 성장해왔다.

당시 배후도시의 조성 원칙은 근로자가 모든 것을 잊고 편안한 주거 생활을 할 수 있는 곳에 주거단지가 위치하는 것이었다. 

1978년 구미시로 승격되면서 신시동이 설치된 후 1990년 형곡동으로 행정동 지명을 변경하였다.

1995년에는 형곡 1동과 2동으로 분동되어 현재에 이르고 있다.

한국지명총람에 따르면 "'시무실' 또는 '형곡'이라 하였는데, 1914년 상형동·하형동·부산동 일부 등을 병합하여 '형곡동'이라 하여 구미면에 편입됨"이라는 기록을 통해 '시무실'이라는 고유 지명을 확인할 수 있다.

또한 과거 이 일대에 분포하던 '시무실(上荊, 형곡 1동)', '사창(下荊, 형곡 2동)', '윗마을(東林洞)', '신기동(下新洞)' 등의 촌락 지명을 알 수 있다.

현재 일부 주민들은 '시무실'이 시무나무가 많아 명명된 것으로, '사창(司倉)'을 신라시대 때 양곡을 보관하던 창고가 있어 유래된 지명으로 인식하고 있다. 현재의 동은 조선 후기 하구미면 지역이었다고 한다.

형곡동은 가까이 금오산을 품고 있는 명품도시로서 싱그러운 청정공기를 제공하는 자연의 혜택을 누리고 있다.
