지역갈등은 역사적으로 있어왔다. 영남과 호남의 갈등을 비롯해 현재는 수도권과 비수도권의 갈등, 낙동강을 두고 상류와 하류의 취수원 이전 갈등 등 대한민국 곳곳에 지역갈등이 산재해 있다.

하지만 각 정부차원에서 지역감정 해소를 위한 정책을 추진해왔으며 1990년대 중후반 이후 국민의식 향상과 지역간의 소통으로 갈등이 서서히 약화되어 왔다.

이는 지역갈등이 지역민들간의 끈기있는 의사소통을 통해 충분히 자연스레 사라질 수 있다는 사실을 보여주지만, 도리어 지역갈등을 부추기는 것은 정치세력의 꼼수에 의한 것이 다반사였다.

이는 정치를 하고자 하는 자들이 인간의 기본 심성인 대립과 대결의 감정을 부추겨 표심을 얻는 비교적 쉬운 선택을 하기 때문이다.

지역갈등의 근본적인 해결책은 사람과 사람 사이의 마음의 다리를 놓아 소통하는 것이다. 따라서 지역과 지역의 갈등 해결의 시작은 왕래의 기본이 되는 길을 놓는 것 부터이다.
