Most parents are like a tall man to their children. They take care of their children to grow up properly and live in a hard journey until they become adults with the right personality.

Parents who don't show their inner feelings and show their inner feelings to their children despite the difficult life journey are the real tall old men.

The novel "Uncle Kidari," published in 1912 by American female novelist Jean Webster, follows the story of the main female college student, "Gerusha Abbott," and uses Judy as a nickname. It consists of writing a letter about college life to Judy's supporter, who is called "the tall uncle."

Judy, an orphan, writes about the shortcomings of her orphanage and is recognized for her ability to write by a councilor who sponsored the orphanage. It is a novel about a long shadow of a councilor who is a supporter but does not know his face and is called a tall man, and it is a novel about various stories he experiences while going to college.

The condition for the sponsor to send Judy to college was small, sending a letter once a month detailing her academic progress and daily stories.

'키다리 아저씨'는 누군가를 책임지고 도움을 주는 후원자를 일컷는 대표적인 말이다.

한 사람의 인생을 책임질 수 는 없지만 바른 방향으로 가도록 하기 위해서는 오랜세월 헌신적이어야 한다.

대다수의 부모는 자식에게 키다리 아저씨같은 존재다. 아이가 바르게 자라도록 뒷바라지 하며 바른 인격을 가진 어른이 될 때까지 고된 여정 속에서 헌신하고 산다.

힘든 인생 여정 속에서도 자식에게는 힘든 내색도 하지 않고 속내를 드러내지 않고 사는 부모들이야말로 진정한 키다리 아저씨다.

미국의 여류 소설가 진 웹스터가 1912년에 발표한 소설 키다리 아저씨는 주인공 여대생인 '제루샤 애버트'의 이야기를 따라 전개되며 애칭으로 주디를 사용한다.  '키다리 아저씨'라고 부르는 주디의 후원자에게 대학교 생활에 대해 편지를 쓰는 형식으로 구성되어 있다.

고아인 주디는 자기가 사는 고아원의 단점에 대해 글을 썼다가, 고아원을 후원해주던 한 평의원에게 문장력을 인정받는다. 후원자이지만 얼굴도 모르는 평의원의 긴그림자를 보고 키다리 아저씨로 부르며, 대학교에 진학하면서 겪는 각종 이야기로 된 소설이다.

후원자가 주디를 대학에 보내주는 조건은 학업 진행 상황과 일상적인 이야기들을 자세하게 쓴 편지를 한 달에 한 번씩 보내는 것으로 소소한 것이었다.

타인의 인생에 동기부여가 될 수 있다는 것은 후원자로서의 보람이라 할 수 있다. 우리 주변에도 이름을 밝히지 않는 독지가와 따뜻한 후원을 아끼지 않는 이들이 존재한다.  누가 알아주지 않더라도 소신있게 후원하는 삶을 사는 진실된 이들에게 경의를 표한다.
