Gimcheon is an old city. No one confesses, but it was as if time had stopped. People were living in the stillness, where something had not changed, and something new had not yet approached. But now, breaking the silence, a new energy is coming in. On Feb. 8, the beginning of the change opened at a small election office in Seongnae-dong.

Hwang Tae-seong, mayoral candidate of the Minjoo Party of Korea. His confident gesture was like a ray of light from an old bookshelf. "Now Gimcheon will change anew," he said. And about 700 people responded to him. Most of them were believers in his dream, and some wanted a change in the city.

Hwang Tae-seong is redesigning Gimcheon. He is not just a candidate. He is the presenter of the vision for Gimcheon. "I will overcome the crisis caused by paralysis of the city government, the collapse of the downtown economy, and the loss of Gimcheon citizens," Hwang said. "We need the citizens to make a decision to move forward to Gimcheon in a promising future." These are not just campaign slogans. They were serious proposals made to Gimcheon's citizens, who had suffered a long slump.

His visions are concrete and feasible. Supporting small business owners, creating jobs for young people, guaranteeing retirement life for the elderly, and eliminating welfare blind spots—all of which are the blueprints of Gimcheon drawn one by one in his mind. The crown prince also came up with broader and deeper plans, including "2030 Childbirth Support, Basic Income for Local Babies, and Support for Public Housing." The use of big data for agricultural innovation and improvement of welfare for the elderly were one of the new aspects of Gimcheon's dreams.

Gimcheon's Political Tipping Point Lee Jae-myung's congratulatory speech supported this. "Right now, the Republic of Korea is on the brink of economic cold and civil war, but it is on the verge of an inflection point of recovery and growth thanks to the great people who protected our democracy. Let's make today's despair the hope of tomorrow." Hwang understands the direction that the saying points to. The opportunity to revive Gimcheon is right now, at this moment.

Hwang's opening ceremony drew attention not only to his believers but also to his political opponents. Lee Young-soo, chairman of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Party, strongly criticized Gimcheon Mayor for committing all kinds of illegal acts, and appealed for the government to judge the current political system on the strength of Gimcheon citizens. The time has come for Gimcheon's citizens to make a choice.

Hwang has a blueprint for a new Gimcheon. His words are by no means empty. Gimcheon, which he hopes for, is no longer a depressed city, but a city where everyone can dream of and hope together. And the wind of change is already blowing toward Gimcheon.

그가 제시한 비전은 구체적이고 실현 가능한 것들이다. 소상공인 지원, 청년 일자리 창출, 어르신 노후생활 보장, 복지 사각지대 해소—이 모든 것들은 그의 마음속에서 하나씩 하나씩 그려진 김천의 청사진이다. 황태성은 "2030 출산지원, 지방아기 기본소득, 공공주택 지원" 등 더 넓고 깊은 계획도 내놓았다. 농업의 혁신을 위한 빅데이터 활용과 노인복지 개선은 그가 꿈꾸는 김천의 새로운 모습 중 하나였다.

김천의 정치적 전환점. 이재명 당대표의 축전은 이를 뒷받침했다. “지금 대한민국은 경제 한파와 내란으로 벼랑 끝에 서 있지만, 민주주의를 지켜주신 위대한 국민 덕분에 회복과 성장의 변곡점에 서 있다. 오늘의 절망을 내일의 희망으로 만들자.” 황태성은 그 말이 가리키는 방향을 이해하고 있다. 김천을 다시 일으킬 기회는 바로 지금, 이 순간에 있다.

황태성의 개소식에는 그를 믿는 사람들뿐만 아니라, 정치적 적대자들마저 그에게 주목했다. 이영수 경북도당위원장은 “국민의힘 김천시장이 온갖 불법을 저질러 2년 동안 시정 공백이 이어졌다”고 강하게 비판하며, 김천시민의 힘으로 현 정치체제를 심판하자고 호소했다. 김천의 시민들이 이제 선택을 해야 할 때가 왔다.

황태성에게는 새로운 김천을 위한 청사진이 있다. 그의 말은 결코 공허하지 않다. 그가 바라는 김천은 더 이상 침체된 도시가 아니라, 누구나 함께 꿈꾸고, 누구나 희망을 품을 수 있는 도시다. 그리고 그 변화의 바람은 이미 김천을 향해 불고 있다.
