South Korea is now facing a golden opportunity to leap forward on the global stage once again in the face of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. With the U.S. having long led the AI industry, and China emerging as a strong challenger, a strategic approach is essential for South Korea to survive and take a leading position in the global competition for AI hegemony. Education and policy will play an important role in this process.

The launch of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party's Special Committee on Science and Technology Innovation led by Rep. Lee Hae-min is an important step toward systematically leading the nation's science and technology and digital innovation. The special committee set four key directions and started full-fledged activities: ▲Creating a robust science and technology R&D ecosystem ▲Building a healthy science and technology innovation ecosystem ▲Education of science and technology and spreading culture ▲Inclusive digital society. This can be seen as part of a national response strategy to prepare for the AI era.

In particular, Chairman Lee Hae-min said, "Now we are at a huge turning point in the rapid development of science and technology such as AI and quantum computing," stressing that it is important not to simply follow changes but to take the lead in creating a new paradigm. This is a necessary attitude for Korea not to fall behind in the global technology competition.

Science and technology policies go beyond just fostering industries. The benefits of AI technology development are not limited to specific companies or classes, but the whole society should be able to share the benefits. At the same time, preparations for the risk factors behind the technology must also be prepared. It is an important part of this approach that the Special Committee on Science and ICT reflects the voices of the field in the policy development process and promotes systematic discussions through expert meetings and policy discussions.

Currently, Korea has strengths in AI research and development capabilities, but more active policy support is needed to spread them throughout the industry and gain global competitiveness. Kim Sun-min, acting chairman of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, stressed that the future is not allowed today without preparation, and that the government should overcome regulations and uncertainties and actively support the development of science and technology. This is a necessary attitude for the Republic of Korea to play a leading role in the AI era.

Now, the Republic of Korea should create new growth engines through AI and digital innovation, as it did in the semiconductor and IT industries in the past. As Rep. Lee Hae-min emphasized, the government, industry, and academia should work together to accelerate innovation in order for the pledge to "the special committee on science and innovation will be the icebreaker of Korea's science and technology policies" to become a reality.

The AI era is not just a technological advancement, but a huge wave that changes social structure and economic paradigm. In order for Korea to lead this huge flow of change, innovative policies and strategic implementation are needed, and now is the moment to seize the opportunity.
