Debate is the process of making mutual arguments on issues and persuading the opposition through argumentation with various examples.

As soon as the issues are mixed in the debate, the debate hovered on the surface, and eventually turned into a back alley verbal fight in which the loudest person wins.

A good debate unfolds with appropriate advocacy and refutation and does not engage in verbal altercation and gimmick.

Writer Park Heung-soon explains to argue with examples of various personalities through the book "War of Words."

The following factors should be kept in mind for the skill of discussion that leads to persuasion.

What trick does the opponent use?

Let advocacy and rebuttal blend together

Accept the debate, and listen first

Overpower with facts-based examples

Demonstrate with examples using fables

Demonstrate as a hypothetical example

Demonstrate on scientific grounds

Politicians tend to carry out their arguments through the "errors of generalization," which is also said to be a skill for fouling if it is a skill of speech.

It is argued that the reason why the error of generalization works is that it pushes with authoritarianism and power. In the book "War of Words," Korean society has enough psychological conditions to show errors in generalization because of excessive obsession with stability, order, and security logic during long-term authoritarian governance.

토론은 쟁점사안에 대해 상호간의 주장을 펼치고 다양한 사례로 논증을 통해 반대측을 설득하는 과정이다.

설득을 이끌어 내는 토론의 기술에 대해 다음과 같은 요소를 염두에 둬야만 한다.

상대가 어떤 술수를 사용하는가

옹호와 반박이 어우러지게하라

토론을 받아들여라, 그리고 먼저 들어라

사실에 기초한 사례로 제압하라

우화를 활용한 예로 논증하라

본보기가 되는 가상 사례로 논증하라

과학적 근거로 논증하라

정치인들은 ‘일반화의 오류’를 통해 주장을 관철하는 경향이 있어 이 또한 말의 기술이라면 반칙을 위한 기술이라고 한다.

일반화의 오류가 통하는 이유에 대해 권위주의와 힘으로 밀어붙이기 때문이라는 주장이 있다. 책 '말의 전쟁'에서는 한국 사회는 오랜 기간 권위주의 통치 과정에서 안정과 질서에 대한 집착, 안보 논리의 집착등이 과도하게 퍼져 있기 때문에 일반화의 오류가 나타날 심리적 조건이 충분하다고 했다.
