Argument means that people with different opinions or positions argue their arguments in words or letters.

In the Vivecananda Proverbs, I Don't Want Happiness (Volume B), the argument is said as follows.

"If anyone wants to argue with you, be quiet. Don't answer any arguments and back off quietly. Because arguments only disturb the mind. Training intelligence is the only thing that needs to be done. What's the point of interrupting it in vain? All arguments will only break the balance of the mind and disrupt the unconscious. There are higher levels beyond them."

The value standard varies depending on which person you argue with, and productive arguments rather than wasteful ones cause constructive changes.

Human thinking grows through various debates, including social issues, economic issues, politics, history, and morality.

In the end, even if it is a different opinion, it is a process to learn about the errors in one's thoughts and judgments through productive arguments.

Only flattery and self-righteousness should avoid disputes with those who dominate the mental world, but disputes with intellectuals who reflect on themselves and care for others provide an opportunity to learn.

논쟁이란 서로 다른 의견이나 입장을 가진 사람들이 각각 자기의 주장을 말이나 글로 논하며 다투는 것을 의미한다.

비베카난다 잠언집<나는 행복을 원하지 않습니다(하권)>에서는 논쟁에 대해 다음과 같이 말하고 있다.

"누가 당신과 논쟁하려거든 침묵하여라. 어떠한 논쟁에도 대답 말고 조용히 물러나라. 왜냐하면 논쟁은 마음만 훼방 놓을 뿐이다. 지성을 훈련하는 것만이 필요하지 헛되이 그것을 방해할 필요가 뭐가 있는가? 모든 논쟁은 마음의 균형을 깨고 무의식에 훼방을 놓을 뿐이다. 그것들을 초월하는 상위 단계가 있다."

논쟁을 어떤 인격체와 하는가에 따라 가치기준이 달라지며, 소모적인 논쟁보다는 생산적인 논쟁은 건설적인 변화를 일으킨다.

인간의 사고는 사회문제에 대한 논쟁, 경제에 대한 논쟁, 정치에 대한 논쟁, 역사에 대한 논쟁, 도덕성에 대한 논쟁 등 다양한 논쟁을 통해 성장한다.

결국 다른 의견일지라도 생산적인 논쟁을 통해 자신의 생각과 판단의 오류 또한  알아가기 위한 과정이 된다.

아집과 독선만이 정신 세계를 지배하는 자와는 논쟁을 피해야하지만 스스로를 성찰하며 타인을 배려하는 지성인과의 논쟁은 배움의 기회를 제공한다.
