자성명상 강연을 맡은 도연 백광흠 선생은 기도와 수행은 조금 다른 형태를 말한다고 한다.

도연에 따르면 기도는 자신이 바라는 바가 이루어지기를 원하면서 하느님, 부처님 등께 가호와 가피를 내려 달라는 의미를 전제로 하는 타력적인 요사가 강한 행위이다.

반면에 탐진치와 삼독심의 마음을 관찰하고 판단과 분별, 불안, 초조, 고통에서 벗어나 우리의 본성인 지혜와 자비를 깨달으려는 자력적 정진을 수행이라 한다.

하지만 참된 기도는 수행과 다르지 않다.

기도라는 방편을 통해서 수행의 터전을 닦고 자리이타의 본질로 들어가는 구조를 갖는 것이다.

본래 성품인 참나를 누구나 다 가지고 있다. 다만 삼독심에 가려져서 참나를 알지 못할 뿐이다.

탐진치 삼독심을 놓아버리기만 하면 우리 안의 참나는 그대로 드러난다.

수행을 통해 우리는 본래 성품인 지혜, 자비, 복덕, 법력으로 살며 인류에게 참다운 이로움을 주는 삶을 사는 것이 또한 수행자의 목표이다.
