The basin surrounded by Hwanggeumbong Peak, Hyojabong Peak, and Dosoryeong Pass, which leads to the beautiful Geumosan Mountain, is a cozy residential area that provides urban residents with natural comfort and relaxation.

According to the Gyeongsang edition of the Korean name-originating book, this place was promoted to Gumi-si in 1978 as Simusil or Hyeonggok, and the name of the administrative dong was changed to Hyeonggok-dong in 1990 after Shinsi-dong was established.

In 1995, it was divided into Hyeonggok 1-dong and 2-dong, and it is now.

In 1914, part of Sanghyeong-dong, Hajyeong-dong, and Busan-dong were merged and incorporated into Gumi-myeon as Hyeonggok-dong," and the unique name Simusil can be confirmed through the record.

In addition, the names of villages such as Simusil, Hyeonggok 1-dong, Sachang, Hyeonggok 2-dong, Wit Village, and Singi-dong, which were distributed in this area in the past, can be known.

Currently, some residents recognize "Simusil" as a name derived from the warehouse where grain was stored during the Silla Dynasty, as it was named because there were many Shimusil trees.

The current dong was the area of Hagumi-myeon in the late Joseon Dynasty.

경상북도 구미시의 남서부에 위치한 행정동으로, 동의 북서쪽을 제외한 모든 지역이 금오산의 북동쪽 산록인 산지로 둘러싸여 있는 분지 지형이다.

수려한 금오산으로 이어지는 황금봉과 효자봉 그리고 도수령으로 둘러 쌓인 분지는 아늑한 주거지로서 도시민들에게 자연의 편안함과 휴식처를 제공해 준다.

한국지명유래집 경상편 지명에 따르면 이곳은 '시무실' 또는 '형곡'으로 1978년 구미시로 승격되면서 신시동이 설치된 후 1990년 형곡동으로 행정동 지명을 변경하였다.

1995년에는 형곡 1동과 2동으로 분동되어 현재에 이르고 있다. 

1914년 상형동·하형동·부산동 일부 등을 병합하여 '형곡동'이라 해서 구미면에 편입됨"이라는 기록을 통해 '시무실'이라는 고유 지명을 확인할 수 있다. 

또한 과거 이 일대에 분포하던 '시무실(上荊, 형곡 1동)', '사창(下荊, 형곡 2동)', '윗마을(東林洞)', '신기동(下新洞)' 등의 촌락 지명을 알 수 있다. 

현재 일부 주민들은 '시무실'이 시무나무가 많아 명명된 것으로, '사창(司倉)'을 신라시대 때 양곡을 보관하던 창고가 있어 유래된 지명으로 인식하고 있다. 

현재의 동은 조선 후기 하구미면 지역이었다.
