금계국 꽃말은 '상쾌한 기분'이라고 한다. 강변을 온통 노란색으로 가득채운 이의 정체가 바로 금계국이다.

원산지가 북아메리카인 금계국은 번식력이 강해 현재 우리나라 전역에서 관찰되고 있다.

금계국은 스스로 잘자라기 때문에 빛과 그늘 어느 곳에서도 잘 자라리만치 생명력이 강하다.

금계라는 이름은 금색의 닭이 볏을 달고 있는 것처럼 꽃잎의 끝이 벼슬을 닮아 뾰족해 보인다는데서 유래됐다는 말도 있다.

꽃은 스스로를 번식시키기 위해 화려한 자태를 뽐내며 핀다. 

보는 이들로 하여금 상쾌한 기분으로 만들어주고, 또 이들에게 채집되어 어디론가 번식의 길로 간다는 점에 서 참으로 영특한 식물이라 할 수 있다.

번식력이 강한데는 그에 걸맞는 이유가 있듯이 세상의 모든 이들의 기분을 상쾌하게 만들어 준다는 사명을 가진 꽃이기 때문이리라.
