Ten years ago, the appearance of the Nakdonggang River Sports Park was a newly planted tree on a wide empty platform, and it was desolate without shade.

Ten years later, a remarkable change has taken place.

In addition to the exotic Geumgyeguk field, the Olle Trail built between large trees makes people who walk through Nakdonggang River Sports Park admire themselves.

At that time, there was a movement to plant 10 million trees.

At that time, people did not realize the value of trees, but seeing the forest that grew abundantly and filled Nakdonggang River Sports Park makes them realize how great the power of forests and nature is.

This is because of the efforts of leaders and people who challenged with faith for constant regional change.

Professor Kim Hyung-seok, who is 104 years old this year, instilled the belief that anyone can do it.

He told people, "You have to boldly jump into reality with the belief and courage to 'do'." Only those who are determined to "do" the law of "does" works."

사진: 10여년에 걸쳐 완성된 구미시 지산낙동강체육공원 전경

10년 전의 낙동강변 체육공원의 모습은 너른 허허발판 위에 갓 심은 나무로 그늘이 없는 황량함 그 자체였다.

10년이 지난 지금은 놀라울 만치 큰 변화가 생겼다. 

이국적인 모습의 금계국 들판을 비롯하여 큰 나무사이로 조성된 올레길 등은 낙동강체육공원을 걷느 이로 하여금 저절로 감탄을 자아내게 만든다.

당시 천만그루 나무심기운동이 있었다. 

그때서는 사람들이 나무의 가치에 대해 깨닫지 못했지만 풍성하게 자라 낙동강체육공원을 가득 메운 숲을 보노라면, 숲과 자연의 힘이 얼마나 위대한지를 새삼 깨닫게 만든다.

이는 끊임없는 지역의 변화를 위해 신념을 갖고 도전했던 리더와 사람들의 노력이 있었기 때문이다.

금년에 104세인 김형석 교수는 누구라도 '하면된다'라는 신념을 심어주었다.

그는 사람들에게 "'한다’는 신념과 용기를 갖고 현실에 과감하게 뛰어들어야 한다. ‘한다’는 각오에 차 있는 사람에게만 ‘된다’는 법칙이 통한다."라고 말했다.
