국립민속박물관 민속소식에 따르면 살다보면 어떤 위험이 닥칠지 아무도 모른다는 의미로 '쥐구멍에도 눈들 날이 있다'라고 표현했다.

이는 여기서 더 떨어질 게 있나 싶은 바닥에 그보다 더한 불행이 찾아들 수 있다는 뜻이다.

반면에 '쥐구멍에도 볕들 날 있다'리는 말은 처지를 체념하고 푸념하는 이에게 볕 들 날이란 결코 없고 '하늘은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다'는 서양의 격언에 비유했다.

즉, 하늘이 무너져도 쏫아날 구멍이 있듯이 어려운 상황에 처했어도 끈기있게 도전하는 사람에게 기회가 온다는 뜻이다.
