무인도 생존물의 원조격인 로빈스 크루소의 작가는 영국의 소설가 대니얼 디포이다.

로빈슨 크루소는 60세의 무명작였던 디포를 순식간에 유명하게 만들어준 소설이다. 그는 정치학자이자 독설로도 유명한 언론인으로도 알려진 인물이기도 하다.

인생의 말년은 남해거품사건으로 인해 전 재산을 다 잃고 비참하게 살다가 쓸쓸하게 운명했다고 한다.

무인도는 사람이 살지 않는 고립된 섬을 의미한다. 비유적으로 섬이 아니어도 외부로부터 격리된 상황을 의미하기도 한다.

일반적인 사회통념으로는 인간은 사회적 동물이어서 사회를 떠나서는 살수 없다. 하지만 로빈스 크루소는 고립된 무인도의 삶에 적응하기 위해 자기만의 사회적 체계를 만들었다.

인간의 생존력은 강하다. 어떤 상황에서도 희망을 잃지 않고 긍정요소를 찾아나가는 사람은 무인도에서 생존하는 로빈스크루소와도 같다고 볼 수 있다.

문명을 경험한 사람들이 원시인처럼 살 수는 없으나, 때론 원시인의 DNA가 발현되기도 하는 것이 인간의 본질임을 깨닫고 자연에 순응해 살아가는 법도 익혀야 한다.
