디지털 기술은 개인이 원하면 언제든지 새로운 자아를 구현하는 것이 가능하게 만들었다. 상상 속에서만 머물던 새로운 자신을 만들고 이를 다시 현실로 끄집어내서 사람들과 만나고, 관계를 맺는 과정에서 현실의 나와 동일한 비중으로 구체화시키는 것이 가능하다.

하지만 오프라인의 삶은 돌보지 않은 채 온라인 세상에 과의존할 경우, 오프라인의 삶에 부정적인 영향을 끼칠 수도 있으며 온라인과 오프라인의 삶의 괴리가 클수록 현실에서 느끼는 불만과 박탈감은 더욱 커질 수 있다.

고용불안, 실업대란, 상시적 구조조정, 비정규직 취업 증가 등 막연한 미래에 대한 행복이나 성공에 대한 기대감은 낮아지고 현재 누릴 수 있는 확실한 행복을 추구하는 사람들이 증가했다.

인스타그램이나 유튜브와 같은 디지털 공간에서 자신이 상상하던 다양한 경험과 체험을 공유하고 간혹 기회를 만나면 인생의 새로운 전환점이 되기도 한다.

1인 미디어를 통해 개인들은 자신의 삶에 대한 새로운 관점과 가치를 확인하고 다양한 정보를 공유하고 나누는 것을 통해 스스로의 존재에 가치를 부여하게 만들었고 워라벨의새로운 지평을 만들어냈다.

디지털을 통한 다양한 삶에 대한 도전은 디지털 전환으로 가속화되고 있으며 디지털 속의 다중 정체성의 실현은 개인에게 만남의 확장, 역량의 확장, 일의 확장을 가져왔다.

디지털 환경을 통한 다양한 정체성에 대한 도전은 인간이 자기 내면에 있던 진정한 자아를 만남으로서 스스로를 성찰할 수 있는 계기이기도 하기 때문에 디지컬 공간에서의 다중정체성은 자신의 긍정적인 자아를 만나는 방법이기도 하다.

일부의 경우, 현실의 도피처로 온라인을 선택할 경우 다양한 도전과 시도를 위한 공간이라기 보다는 누군가에게 가식적이고 거짓된 삶을 공유하고 그로 인해 부정적인 사회적 문제를 초래할 수도 있다.

따라서 디지털 시대는 인간의 순수한 내면을 얼마나 잘 가꾸어 가는지에 따라 미래가 결정된다고 해도 과언이 아니다.
