It is a winter of severe cold. Seoul is said to have reached minus 14 degrees Celsius. Winter is also the season that causes the worst pain for the poor in society.

Penguins living in the coldest Antarctic on Earth protect themselves with special dense feathers and skin structures that can withstand the intense cold.

However, penguins' body structure alone cannot withstand extreme Antarctic weather.

When a group of penguins comes out of the water and rests, they gather in one place to reduce exposure to the cold as much as possible and share their body temperature with each other.

Penguins live by giving up their warm inner seats by exchanging positions with each other. They are helping each other and living together in order to survive in the group.

Humans have a lot to learn from animals. We need a warmer mindset in a cold and harsh world like a group of penguins.

People with frozen hearts drive their lives into the cold on their own.

Like physical cold, the cold of the mind can be overcome through warm attention and consideration.

For this practice, let's light one candle in our hearts and connect it to another candle to share warmth to the cold people.

혹독한 추위의 겨울이다. 서울은 영하 14도까지 내려갔다고 한다. 겨울은 사회빈곤층 사람들에게 최악의 고통을 주는 계절이기도 하다.

지구상에서 가장 추운 남극에 살고있는 펭귄은 강한 추위에도 견딜 수 있는 촘촘하게 난 특별한 깃털과 피부구조로 몸을 보호하고 있다.

하지만 펭귄의 신체구조만으로는 극한의 남극 날씨를 견뎌낼수는 없다. 

펭귄 무리는 물 밖에 나와 쉴 때는 한 곳에 오밀조밀 뭉쳐서 추위에 노출되는 부위를 최대한 줄이고 체온을 서로 나눈다.

게다가 펭귄들은 서로 안과 빆의 자리를 바꾸면서 좀 더 따뜻한 안쪽 자리를 양보하며 살아간다. 무리의 존속을 위해 서로 돕고 함께 살아가는 것이다.

인간이 동물에게서 배울 점은 많다. 펭귄 무리와도 같이 춥고 각박한 세상속에서 더욱 따뜻한 마음가짐이 필요하다.

마음이 얼어붙은 사람들은 자신의 인생을 스스로 추위 속으로 내몰게 된다.

물리적인 추위와 마찬가지로 마음의 추위도 따뜻한 관심과 배려를 통해 극복할 수 있다.

이러한 실천을 위해 마음속에 촛불 하나를 켜고 또하나의 촛불에 이어 붙여 추운 이들에게 온기를 나눠주자.
